The Valor Podcast Episode 10: Goodnight Marines

Nearly 2.5 million men and women have been deployed since 9/11 in the Global War on Terror. Many warriors have children in their family and find it difficult to talk to them about what they do in the military. The Valor Podcast’s Nick Layman speaks with Marine Corps, Major David Dixon on his children’s book, “Goodnight Marines.”

I served with Maj David Dixon in Iraq. It was an honor to serve with him and so I’m glad he chose to serve when he did. I chose to serve at the same time in history, but I was 30 when I applied and 31 when I joined. In the podcast, David said he joined straight out of college because it is a physically demanding job. When faced with the same choice at 31 years young, I discovered that men’s endurance peaks at around 35 years of age (it’s 27 for women) so I didn’t think I would be at a disadvantage at all. I just mention that because I wouldn’t want people in their late 20s and early 30s to feel discouraged from joining.

Thanks for sharing your story. Anyone who is called to serve our nation has a special skill set of mental and physical toughness.
